Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
Ah yes, the group that I have collected since 1966 and have just about everything ever released, and a few things that haven't. A new CD has been promised probably since 1991, first a Four Seasons album that was reutedly being delayed by "excessive perfectionism" according to the musical d...

Samsung GX-1L Kit
I have noticed that Jacobs are offering the Samsung GX-1L with Samsung 18-55mm and 50-200mm lenses as a package at a total of £369.99 This is incredible value for a very fine 6.1MP DSLR plus the marque lenses to go with it. The camera and lenses are in fact made by Pentax and the equivalent Pentax m...

Hancock's Half Hour
We recently rented the first DVD of the 1961 TV series. Some of this stuff is very stilted and dated, but there's no denying the fantastic timing and quality of Tony Hancock's performances. Once he warms up he's very slick, even when getting lines wrong he recovers with style and panache. "Hanc...

Back from Holiday
Well here we are, back from a 7 day trip around the Dumfries & Galloway area of Scotland. The weather was good, we found some excellent photographic opportunities and it was only a lack of Internet Access that was a drawback. Being quiet and peaceful is OK in small doses but it's good to have co...

New Worlds
My collection of New Worlds continues to grow nearer to completion. NW was the premier UK SF magazine, starting its life in 1946 under the editorship of John Carnell. It got interesting, and my collection starts, with its move to Compact SF under the new editor Michael Moorcock. Then sysnonymous wit...

Some New Letters of Edward FitzGerald
Dating from 1923, this book collects 100 or so letters from EFG to Bernard Barton, plus some xplanations and sundry replies. The letters are as always, amusing, incredibly well written and offer an amazingly detailed insight into Victorian life. Books of letters are not popular these days, perhaps s...

Sharpening Technique in Lab mode
Ana lternative technique, especially useful for aechitectural shots, is Lab Mode sharpening. First convert the image to Lab mode (Image>Mode>Lab Color) Select the Lightness channel, which contains the black and white image only, and apply quite a high level of sharpening to this, maybe 100 - 150% or...
