Hancock's Half Hour

Post by John »

We recently rented the first DVD of the 1961 TV series. Some of this stuff is very stilted and dated, but there's no denying the fantastic timing and quality of Tony Hancock's performances. Once he warms up he's very slick, even when getting lines wrong he recovers with style and panache.

"Hancock's 43 Minutes" is a very odd variety show, very similar to an early Morecambe & Wise, complete with patter between Hancock and Sid James, "turns" and even a play to finish off with. Actually rather impressive, but I don't think a modern audience would go for performing Chimps and a Harmonica player, however good they might be.

An interesting bit of archive TV. Recommended.
