Sentinels From Space by Eric Frank Russell

Post by John »

Dobson, 1968, originally published by Better Publications Inc., 1951 as "The Star Watchers" and then in 1953 as "Sentinels From Space".

This novel is another classic example of a Russell story that is masquerading as SF but is something much more. Whilst satisfying the SF reader with its setting and story line, behiind this there is some brilliant writing and a far deeper message. On the surface we have an adventure tale that spans from Terra to Venus and Mars with ahero who is seemingly invincible. Beneath this veil is a very moral tale that ultimately is one of tremendous hope and splendour.

It is a beautiful thing and a work of the highest artistry. As usual, I won't reveal any of the plot. I will just say that this new reading has shown me aspects of the book that I may not have fully appreciated when I first read it many years ago. I think it is such a shame that so few people these days realise what a splendid author EFR was. Again, I urge you to try him out.
