Perry Mason Series 1 and 2

Post by John »

We have now run through the two available seasons of perry Mason, starring Raymond Burr (Perry Mason), Barbara Hale (Della Street), William Talman (Paul Drake) etc.

These are black and white, well filmed, very slick Holywood TV productions from the very late 1950s and they were prime time TV in the UK in the 1960s. Based upon Erle Stanley Gardner's characters and with many of them based on specific novels. The set up, the murder, the court scenes. Splendid.

The characters don't develop much as they knew what they were doing from Day One it seems. However, by the end of Season Two we might wonder why Perry and Della spend quite so much time together. Do secreraries work after 10pm and then go of to dinner with the boss? In the last few episodes, without anything being said, the relationship becomes more ambiguous and opens the possibility that something of an undercurrent may be going on here. Don't forget this is 1959, so heaven forbid that anything could be openly stated.

The two seasons viewed so far have been a constant delight. I hope Season 3 is on its way soon!
