The Mentalist

Post by John »

The USA networks are capable of pulling out the stops and producing some excellent material these days. Cinematic quality is required by modern audiences and TV has to match up.

The Mentalist is an interesting scenario - a fake celebrity psychic loses his wife and children to a physcotic killer. He renounces his fake life and uses his observational talents to help local police solve crimes. Simon Baker plays lead character Patrick Jayne esuperbly, with just the right balance between playing the good guy but being insufferably arrogant and self satisfied whilst underneath hurting badly and actually having a considerate streak for his colleaugues. It's a complex characterisation that pays off. The supporting characters are convincing and the series is shot with style.

Can we forgive the over-Photoshopped pictures of the cast on the DVD? It might have been better to keep Portrait Professional away from the photographers.....

Season Two started off with a couple of slightlky shaky and over-convenient plotlines, but soon settled in. Series Three we have just finished and that hit the ground running and never stopped. Excellent.

Not so sure that the resolution at the end of the season regarding Red John wasn't a bit thin, but we'll see when Season Four arrives!
