The Four Seasons Live 1973

Post by John »

The show that never was, at least not in the UK.

Early in the year Frankie was having problems with some of the band members and this came to a head at a show at the Capital Theatre, Newark, New Jersey, where organist Bill deLoach refused to do any encores leading to Frankie sacking the whole group (which is an entity owned by Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio) and cancelling everything for a month.

Sadly that also meant a full UK tour bit the dust.

The upside is that Frankie reformed everything within the month and resumed touring, troublesome people replaced and he himself rested and restored. The rigours of doing 250 shows a year cannot be but guessed at. If you want to know why Frankie was working so hard, then look at the story of the stage show "Jersey Boys". Basically it was to pay off the group's debts from badly managed times in the late 1960s.

Recordings made at concerts in 1973 and 1974 reveal a strong and powerful show full of both the old hits and lots of new material, none of which was a commercial success but the quality of which cannot be denied. By now fortunes were such that generally they were accompanied by their own horn section. This was necessary because the "resident" horn players at various venues were, in Frankie Valli's words, "Sometimes a little shaky..."

At the end of this period, they had left an unfruitful spell with Motown, taking with them just one track that was to prove pivotal in restoring that commercial success so badly needed. "My Eyes Adored You" was a huge Frankie Valli solo recording and it heralded in a whole series of UK tours.
