Seasons Greetings (Vee Jay, 1962)

Post by John »

This is the original 1962 release title. It was reissued in 1967 as The Four Seasons' Christmas Album. Both releases are identical. Reputedly recorded in 24 hours, this was out in time for Christmas 1962. The first side is an extended medley of Christmas tunes, although some parts are recorded separately and spliced in. Highlight has to be a splendid rendition of The Carol of the Bells. The strangest part is probably Frankie Valli singing Silent Night in falsetto and sounding like a little girl. It's fun to do though. The second side is basically six pop tracks all "Seasonised" and including Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus as well as a very good original ballad (Christmas Tears) and a bizarre "Jungle Bells" complete with Frankie doing jungle noises....

There is nothing else quite like this record. Uneven perhaps, but sometimes inspired.
