On a French Baignade Hunt

There we were, in le Tronchet actually, just walking alongside one of the three lakes and suddenly we saw the sign "Baignade Interdite." Aha, we thought, something is forbidden, but alas we did not know what a Baignade was. If it was forbidden, we reasoned, it must be dangerous, probably with large teeth and a generally unpleasant disposition.
We proceeded with care, glad that we were following in the footsteps of another couple. Any dangerous Baignades would find and devour them first!
We did think we spotted a small Baignade once, terrible enough, but in the distance, but managed to avoid the main pack and return safely to our hotel. An abbatoir, by the way.
We were really lucky not to be caught by the Baignades whilst swimming, when I hear they are especially dangerous.
