The Balfours hail from Edinburgh and latterly the aunts (Jeannie, Alice, Mary) lived in Marchmont Road.
In the 1930s they had their family holidays in and around Crail and Balcomie beach. I travelled up to Crail a few years back and had a long walk round the headland.
The walk from Crail to Balcomie by road ia a long, straight piece of tarmac that passes a disused airfield where the cows roam free. This is fine, but have you ever walked three miles followed by a huge crowd of silent cows, only separated by a flimsy three foot high fence?
An eerie walk indeed as I was shadowed by these Bovine creatures of undisclosed intent. I wonder what they were thinking...
